Something for Everyone, December 8, 2010

I have never subscribed to McCall’s quilting magazine, but if this book is an indication of the type and quality of quilt patterns it offers that is a decision I will definitely reconsider.

“Fast Favorites from McCall’s Quilting” offers 20 quilting patterns in a variety of styles and colors. These quilts offer something for everyone. There are structured quilts, scrap quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed pieced and applique. I particularly love “Basically Batik” which uses hourglass blocks in a variety of sizes to create a simple quilt with a a great deal of visual intensity. The directions were easy to follow and straight forward. Many quilt books contain patterns of only a certain type, this is definitely not the case with “Fast Favorites from McCall’s Quilting”.

Whether you want to make a bed quilt, a wall hanging or a quilt to celebrate a special occasion this book has something for you.

Beth Hayes is the Editor in Chief for McCall’s Quilting and her mission is to seek out fast quilts that are classic and artistic. This collection has some of her favorites. If you have a variety of fat quarters in your stash, get them out for patterns such as: “Two-scoop Sunday” which has a unique shoofly block design for a bed quilt. If a table topper is what you are after, “Cottage Kitchen” has that warm country charm complete with fussy cut from your favorite floral collection. Do you want a contemporary design, then you will love “Domino”, with black round centers you will be able to choose from a variety of fabric choices to match your own décor. Care for a scrappy look, ” Lattice Garden” will be a hit, it is cheerful and depending on your fabric choice this could be a favorite for all seasons.

If you are as avid a quilter as I am, then this book will only be a duplicate of patterns you already have. On the other hand, if you want a book that only has patterns, then this is a good book to purchase.

The patterns are all beautiful and fun. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The graphics are enough to keep me on the right path. And, just in case, there is a small basics section at the END of the book. You jump right into the patterns.

With 20 patterns, you should be quilting all year.
