Designs consisting of interlocking animal motifs repeated in reverse colors are common in certain types of ancient Peruvian artifacts.

Here, I believe we’re seeing felines, possibly Jaguars judging from the spots, depicted in stylized interlockig motifs. They altenate in white-on-red and red-on-white.

The bands of different colors and widths are another feature of ancient Peruvian textliles.

I like to look at the bands on a piece of fabric to see if they repeat or if there’s a pattern to the distribution of various widths and colors.

It’s not unusual to find bands in different hues of the same color, a testament to the sophisication of the dyes.

This is an example of the fine textiles produced by the weavers of pre-Columbian Peru.

The dry climate on the coast of Peru preserves ancient textiles and other organic materials that are often absent at archaeological sites elsewhere.

The fabric is either cotton or wool (from llamas or alpacas), and the dyes are natural.

Zoomorphic designs such as the ones seen here are common in Peru. There is a feline motif.
