Fabric Yardage and cosplay/sewing tips?

Question by Firestarter J: Fabric Yardage and cosplay/sewing tips?
So im going to be doing a Sailor Mars Cosplay and I’m going to be making the whole costume from scratch, im not sure how much fabric im going to need. I’m going to need fabric for the shirt part, the skirt, the sailor flappy thing and the bows. how much is a yard compared to? (ex.a bolt is about a bottle cap size) Also should i use zippers, buttons or velcro so i can easily take off and on? any other tips would be nice too :3 🙂 thank you~!

You’ll want to start with a pattern with a high neckline and a basque waist. Try Simplicity 1818, modifying the sleeve to cap, and adding a sailor collar — the draft is here, p. 205: http://ebookbrowsee.net/modern-pattern-design-1942-pdf-d311083424 — and shortening the skirt. Add a tie.

How much fabric depends on the width of the fabric and your size. I’d buy a yard or meter of 40-45″ wide white fabric and a yard and a half/1.5 m of red (probably something like cotton poplin or poly/cotton blend poplin) and a yard/meter of white and one of red if the fabric is 54-60″ wide.
