You didn’t mention what it is you want to sew, but Simplicity makes good patterns that are easy for a beginner. So does Very Easy Very Vogue. You can choose one or more and then ask the lady at the fabric store which one is most suitable for a beginner. She’ll help you choose fabric and trim and notions for the pattern as well. You’ll develop an “eye” for the easy patterns–which ones have simple zippers, buttonholes, and styles, then you can move up to the more complicated patterns as you gain experience. Something that helped me as I was learning to sew was sewing a few simple dresses for a friend’s child to give me practice with seams, trim, and buttonholes. Something else that is a good idea is to make a “fitting shell”, which is a “shell” of a dress in simple cotton fabric that isn’t expensive, to give you practice working with it and fitting it before you buy more expensive fabric for a dress. There is a specific pattern for this shell that’s in the pattern book–again, the fabric store lady will be able to help you. A shell is a good idea because it helps you work with fitting something in your size, and gives you practice in a dress, which is also helpful for blouses and skirts.
