Q&A: Help with Brother XL-2600i (Upper thread not catching 100% of the time)?

Question by Jen B: Help with Brother XL-2600i (Upper thread not catching 100% of the time)?
I am very good with mechanics and after taking this apart a few times I noticed that the piece that is supposed to pull the upper thread around the bobbin rarely does so, no matter how taught or slack. After I fixed the knotting issue because of chips in the same piece of plastic I’m just now able to even sew for any amount of time, but its just poking holes in the fabric because it won’t catch about 70% of the time.
I didn’t even want a machine this big, if it’s something that needs to be seriously repaired I’m just going to return it.
(Since I cannot reply to comments, I will write it here)
Is is not the bobbin thread I’m having trouble with, it is not the needle, it is not the foot, I fixed all of that stuff yesterday, it is the top thread that will not hook on to the spinner that goes around the bobbin thread, and that’s where chips were, but I smoothed them out. I replaced the needle, and all of that is fine. But the devise that spins around the bobbin thread with the top thread is not catching that top thread when the needle does down.

EDITED TO ADD: That spinner is the sewing hook, and you may have damaged it in your attempts to repair. It probably now needs to be replaced.

If you’re seeing chips in the sewing machine around the needle hole or on the sewing hook, you’ve got a bent needle or the machine was not properly constructed or you’re trying to push or pull fabric under the presser foot.

The usual reason for machines, particularly new ones, not catching the bobbin thread, is that the needle is bent, damaged, not inserted in the clamp completely, or is in backwards. The usual suggestion that this is caused by a machine out of time is actually a very uncommon occurence. You can check it by putting in a brand new needle, size 12/80, right way around, and comparing it to the correct diagram here:
