How to clean the batik I bought in Africa?

Question by Brandi S: How to clean the batik I bought in Africa?
I purchased a beautiful batik on a recent trip to South Africa. Having spent some time in the winelands as well, a bottle burst in my bag on the way home. Luckily, the wine was white, so the batik isn’t really damaged beyond the very strong smell. IAfter some research i read that others had had problems of the dyes used by folk artists were sometimes not fixed properly and would bleed in the wash. is there any way to test this? I would like to eventually have it quilted and made into a blanket or throw. If I can’t wash it, how should I go about getting the smell out so that I can at least use it as a wall hanging?

Take a cotton ball or q-tip saturated in a mild detergent and cold water and gently rub in a corner or inconspicuous place to check for bleeding and colorfastness. If the fabric does not bleed, set the dye by rinsing it in cold water withe either salt or white vinegar. Good luck!
